Nicaragua Team to be Commissioned at North Campus Tonight

Wednesday night 3/28 at North Campus will be the commissioning ceremony for the 15 member team leaving for Nicaragua during Holy Week.  We have partnered with Good News In Action and the local Baptist church, Vida Nueva Managua (New Life Managua), for this evangelism focused trip.

Time in the capital city of Managua will be spent canvassing neighborhoods daily inviting children to “Kids Clubs” (similar to Vacation Bible School), inviting adults and children to evening showings of skits and movies depicting the Gospel, & person-to-person evangelism.  Through spanish speaking interpreters, team members will share the life changing message of Jesus Christ with all they come in contact with.

Church members from Vida Nueva follow up on all decisions that are made.  Past trips have had over 400 decisions – and most were adults!  We expect the Lord to do great things this time as well.

The Nicaragua team departs this weekend on Saturday, March 31st and returns on Saturday, April 7th.  It is comprised of 11 members from HGBC North Campus, 4 members from Main Campus, and includes both adults and teenagers. Wayne Teague is the team leader for the second year in a row.

Prayer Reguests:

  • Pray for boldness to share the Gospel
  • People are receptive and believe the message
  • Supplies taken are multiplied and useful
  • The Lord would work through all circumstances
  • The “Kids Clubs” in the mornings are fun and help children learn about Jesus
  • Evening movies and skits effectively present the Gospel
  • Vida Nueva Managua grows and produces more leaders for the region
  • Jesus is glorified and gets all the credit

Pittsburgh Student Team Commissioned

Last night we commissioned 63 of our students and adult leaders to carry the good news of Jesus Christ to the city of Pittsburgh. Our teams are partnering with Living Faith Community Church pastored by Ken Cordray. Ken was led to Christ, baptized, discipled and sent out from Hickory Grove Baptist Church to take the good news of Jesus Christ to the city of Pittsburgh. The first team will depart on Tuesday, April 3rd and return on Saturday, April 7th. Their time in Pittsburgh will be spent canvassing neighborhoods, participating in community outreach and Easter egg hunts all for the purpose of sharing the Gospel with those they come in contact with. The second team will depart on Tuesday, April 10th and return on Saturday, April 14th. This team will be coordinating follow-up with the contacts made the previous week as well as various projects throughout the community. Please be in prayer for these teams as they prepare and go to incarnate Christ in this dark city.

Prayer Requests:
– Pray for God to be honored in all we say and do.
– Pray for the Gospel to be spread to everyone our teams come in contact with.
– Pray for unity for our team and servant’s spirit for each team member.
– Pray for protection during our travels and our time in Pittsburgh.
– Pray that the people of Pittsburgh would know that the kingdom of Heaven has come near to them.

Check back here throughout the trip for updates on what God is doing. You can also follow the week’s events on Twitter and Facebook.

Laundry Love Project – March 16, 2012

Last Friday night, our church participated in our second Laundry Love Project at the Rocketship Laundromat across the street from Main Campus. Laundry Love Projects provide dinner, childcare and free laundry service to members of our community at a local laundromat.

We met and spoke with people from several different walks of life, from single moms to foreign nationals who were recently transplanted to the United States for work.

One of our guests was grateful that Hickory Grove was able to take a significant financial burden from her so she could afford to buy groceries for her family. Our church body was able to minister to a lady who had just recently lost her mother and was blessed to have someone give her a small leg up financially, but more importantly, she had the opportunity to just sit and talk through her pain with someone who cared.

Pray that the people we met Friday night would come to a full understanding of the life-changing power of the Gospel.

As a church, we are called to GO to our community. Now is not the time to retreat from the mission that God has placed on our doorstep. We must boldly go forward, show the love of Jesus Christ and communicate the truth of the Gospel to our city. Will you be +1?

If your Sunday school class would like to host a Laundry Love Project, please call the Missions Office at 704-531-4028

Missionary Focus: The Byrds

Bobby & Willene Byrd began participating in short term missions trips in 2005 and were so impacted by the spiritual needs of those in other parts of the world they knew over time that God was speaking to them through their experiences. In 2008, Bobby was presented the opportunity to visit Guatemala with a group of men to see a potential ministry opportunity. Their lives would be forever changed. In August of 2010, Bobby & Willene followed God’s leading and moved to Guatemala and established World Reach Missions to reach the poor in spirit with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through spiritual, physical, educational and financial opportunities. Together they serve as Central American Director of Missions.

Bobby & Willene are natives of North Carolina. Bobby served as Vice President of The Byrd’s Group, a regional landscape management firm where he was responsible for sales, marketing and financial oversight. He attended Central Piedmont Community College where he earned a A.A. with a focus on Spanish.

Willene attended Central Piedmont Community College where she earned a A.S. in Business Information Systems prior to completing a B.S. in Management Information Systems at Gardner Webb College. She earned a teaching certificate from UNC at Charlotte and has taught elementary education for 10 years at Hickory Grove Baptist Christian School.

World Reach Missions provides ministry support for World Reach Guatemala, a non-governmental organization registered in Guatemala.

Hickory Grove Baptist Church partners with the North Carolina Baptist Men for our disaster relief efforts.  The North Carolina Baptist Men is the largest Baptist relief unit in the nation.  They have a wonderful reputation for assistance and have been used in disaster relief and recovery all over the world.

One of the first steps in partnering with NC Baptist Men is for them to train volunteers.  The training allows volunteers to become versed in disaster relief efforts and eventually to receive training in such areas as food preparation, recovery and building efforts, childcare, administration and communications. The more trained volunteers we have as a church the more opportunities we will have to respond to not only the disasters in future catastrophic events.

Please take this opportunity to sign up!
